Safety of Excessive Pavement Wedge Due to Overlays
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigates the potential hazard to vehicles of excessive roadside edge wedge (defined as a wide, deep edge treatment) and develops a safety design countermeasure. Using the Human Vehicle Environment (HVE) simulation tool, a typical driving scenario, road profile, and vehicle and driver behavior were selected to represent high risk situations. Wedge heights and slopes were modeled and varied to study the potential hazard to vehicles for different pavement conditions (i.e. dry or wet), vehicle type/size and load configurations, and driver’s reaction times. The effects of other parameters were also evaluated. A large sample of wedge dimensions was investigated. Tractor semi-trailers experienced the most severe instabilities. A geometric criterion was introduced to help design safer roadside edge wedges. Working Paper NCAC 2006-W-001 June 2007

متن کاملDesign of green engineered cementitious composites for pavement overlay applications
The construction, repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements relies on the production and flow of large quantities of concrete and its constituents. Within the US, nearly 43 megatons of cement are used annually for the construction, repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements, accounting for over 39 megatons of CO2 emissions. To reduce environmental impact and improve the sustainabilit...
متن کاملAn Investigation on In-situ Strength and Bonding Strength of Polymer Modified Concretes (PMC) as Repair Overlays on Conventional Concrete Substrate
Polymer modified concrete (PMC) consists of Portland cement concrete with a polymer modifier. Its advantages are proper bonding strength to substrate concrete, high tensile and flexural strength and low amount of shrinkage and permeability. Using PMC overlays can be considered as a method for preservation of damaged concrete structures due to their suitable performance and durability. In this r...
متن کاملThe Effect of Initial Pavement Smoothness on Long- Term Roughness Progression: Some Findings from C-ltpp and Us-ltpp Studies
This brief provides findings on the observed effect of initial pavement smoothness (also known as initial roughness, or as-constructed roughness) on the long-term pavement roughness progression of asphalt overlays. The relationship can be used as a measure for estimating the long-term effect of pavement smoothness and for consideration when developing smoothness specifications and/or payment ad...

A jointed rock mass presents a more complex design problem than the other rock masses. The complexity arises from the number (greater than two) of joint sets which define the degree of discontinuity of medium. The condition that arises in these types of rock masses is the generation of discrete rock blocks, of various geometries. They defined by the natural fracture surfaces and the excavation...
